Drowning doesn’t only happen in rivers or oceans, and it doesn’t only affect people who can’t swim. It can happen to performance athletes, swimmers who train daily. I know because I’ve been there.
Even the strongest athletes are not invincible. Exhaustion can make someone faint in the water. Certain medical conditions, like epilepsy or heart issues, can cause a swimmer to drown quietly, without anyone noticing. That’s why regular medical check-ups are crucial for performance athletes.
Safety in the pool is not only the lifeguard’s responsibility, it’s also the coach’s, the athlete’s, and even teammates. Staying alert, understanding warning signs of fatigue, and knowing emergency procedures can save lives.
Swimming fast isn’t just about performance, it’s about staying safe. Awareness, preparation, and vigilance are the real tools that protect every swimmer in the water.
