For NCAA Division I and DII programs, June 15 after your sophomore year (grade 10/Year 11) of high school is when college coaches can officially begin direct communication with swimmers. That means phone calls, texts, emails, recruiting conversations, and official visit discussions can start becoming real.

For many families, this is the moment the process suddenly feels serious.

But here’s what most people don’t realize:

The swimmers who are getting attention on June 15 usually didn’t start preparing on June 15.

Coaches have often been following these athletes for months, sometimes years. They’ve watched their progress, results, attitude, consistency, and development over time.

That’s why this date matters so much for 15 and 16-year-old swimmers.

By the time June 15 arrives, swimmers should already be building good habits:

  • Staying consistent in training

  • Keeping academics in a strong place

  • Understanding what level they fit into

  • Learning how the U.S. system works

  • Communicating professionally with coaches

  • Tracking progress over time

Because recruiting is not only about swim times. College coaches are also looking for athletes who are coachable, mature, reliable, and a good fit for their team culture.

One of the biggest mistakes families make is waiting until the final year of high school to learn about recruiting. By then, many conversations, relationships, and opportunities may already be moving quickly.

The reality is simple: college recruiting starts earlier than most people think.

The swimmers who stay prepared early are usually the ones with more options, less stress, and better long-term opportunities in the recruiting process.
