NCAA D1 Isn’t the Only Path: Why D2 Swimming Deserves More Respect

I work with many swimmers, and I often hear them say: “If you don’t get recruited by a D1 school, there’s no point in going to the US.” This idea is simply wrong and comes from a misunderstanding of how college swimming actually works. Division I programs are excellent, but they are not the only way to build a successful and rewarding college swimming experience.
What many athletes don’t fully realize is how competitive D1 swimming truly is. Teams are large, standards are high, and racing opportunities can be limited, especially for swimmers who are still developing. Being on a D1 roster is an achievement, but improvement, confidence, and enjoyment usually come from racing consistently and having a meaningful role on the team. You might proudly say you’re a D1 swimmer… but how often do you actually race? How many dual meets are you left out of? How often do you miss relays, conference selection, or even travel squads?
This is where Division II programs can be an excellent option. Many D2 teams are highly competitive, offer strong coaching, and give swimmers more opportunities to race, score points, swim relays, and qualify for championship meets. Swimmers often receive more individualized attention and have a clearer role within the team.
Choosing between D1 and D2 isn’t about which division is “better.” It’s about finding the right fit for your level, your goals, and your long-term growth. Give yourself the chance to explore all options, stay open-minded, and don’t limit your future by focusing on only one division. Five years from now, what matters most is looking back and knowing you had the best possible college experience, both in and out of the pool.
